OMFG I HATE PEOPLE

I'm at my parent's house for my sister's thirteenth birthday. Just now my dad was outside In the garden, and he saw one of her dogs bleeding from his side.

Someone shot him. And we can't find her other dog. Dad is taking him to the vet right now, and I'm watching my nephew while everyone else combs the woods looking for dog #2.

God, people fucking suck. These two dogs (a pair of labs, yellow and black) are the sweetest, most non aggressive dogs. There is the slight possibility that they were shot on accident by a deer hunter, but this happened sometime between 1:30 and 3 PM, and the best time for deer hunting is morning/evening.

ETA: dog #2 is still missing and presumed dead. They are normally inseparable; the missing dog is named Shadow because he follows Cody everywhere. Cody is incredibly lucky; the bullet ricocheted around inside him, but didn't damage any major organs. He has some cracked ribs and a partially broken hip, and had a drainage tube inserted, and is wearing a cone of shame.




The wound in his chest is where he was shot; the smaller wound on his hip is where the bullet was removed.



Shadow is still missing; at this point we are pretty certain he was killed. We showed a picture of Cody's wound to my brother in law, who, as previously mentioned, is slightly obsessed with weapons and has eight guns, and he said it looks like Cody was shot at close range. It's looking more and more like this was not a hunting accident, and my gut feeling is that this was not an isolated incident. I suggested to my parents that they call the local newspaper and see if they would be willing to run a story. I am hoping I'm completely wrong, but I absolutely would not be surprised if other people in the area came forward with similar stories.

OH, THE BEST PART.

When the vet pulled the bullet out, they discovered it was a hollowpoint. Which is not a bullet anyone who actually intended to kill a deer would go hunting with. So the chances of this being accidental is getting lower and lower--I can see accidentally shooting one dog, but both of them?

My dad was so angry last night, he dropped the f bomb. If I had a shred of sympathy left for my fellow man, I'd say god help these creeps if he ever finds out who they are, because he won't wait for the police to do something.

And it was during her birthday party. :( She's still very upset about Shadow, obviously. It's the not knowing, imagining him dying alone and in pain. We sent her to the vet with Dad and Cody instead of letting her help look for Shadow, in case--you know.

I don't know, but we showed a picture of the wound to my brother in law, who is a total gunbunny and does a lot of hunting. He said it looked like the dog was shot at close range. Also, when the vet removed the bullet, it was a hollow-point--not a bullet anyone with a desire to kill a deer quickly and cleanly would use. So the odds of this being an accident are plummeting.

I once knew a lady who's dog was shot right in her front yard. Just by someone "annoyed" with the dog (aka trespassing on her property and saw the dog as an inconvenience).

People fucking suck.

I really hope they are able to find Shadow. :( Please keep us updated! My heart and thoughts go out to you guys. And I wish Cody a speedy recovery! (And that you can find these assholes who did this!)

I just updated, in fact. They found Shadow, dead. :( Some stupid hunters couldn't be assed to come to the house and ask us to keep the dogs locked up while they're hunting. And when we were out looking for Shadow, we found their hunting stand, and it's only about 100 yards from my parents' house, for fuck's sake. My sister-in-law's brother met them one day when he was out hunting, and he said they asked him about the dogs, who they belonged to, and he told them where we live. So it's not like they didn't know. But since we can't prove that they were on our property when the dogs were shot, the sheriff can't do anything.
